spend-free days

A spend-free day is a day with no spending from envelopes that end a no-spend day. The calendar marks it with a gold tile and a ✦.

You decide which envelopes can be spent from without ending a no-spend day. Paying a fixed bill, like rent, does not end one unless you change it.

  1. Tap the overview tab.
  2. Under the month name, above the calendar, tap days spend-free. It’s the box with the gold ✦.
  3. On no-spend days, scroll to the bottom.
  4. Tap Only transactions from certain envelopes count.
  5. On spend tracking, turn the switch next to each envelope on or off:
    • On: Okay to spend from, will not end a no-spend day
    • Off: Spending from this will end your no-spend day

Each switch saves as soon as you flip it. There is no save button.

Until you change them, fixed envelopes are on. Variable and savings envelopes are off, so spending from them ends the day.

The first time you open no-spend days, the app opens spend tracking on top of it, with the same switches. Tap continue when you’re done. You can change your choices later with the steps above.

Only an expense you record from an envelope whose switch is off. These never end one:

  • income
  • a transfer between envelopes
  • stuffing your envelopes
  • an upcoming bill, until you record it
  • spending from an envelope whose switch is on
  • correcting you have to match your bank

Today counts as spend-free until you record spending that ends it. Days that haven’t happened yet never count.

The calendar uses your current switches for every day, including past days. If you turn an envelope’s switch on, past days with spending from that envelope can turn gold.

The calendar on overview and on no-spend days uses the same marks:

  • Gold tile with a ✦: a spend-free day.
  • Small dot: spending that ends a no-spend day.
  • Green tile: a stuffing day, either the day you last stuffed or the day your next stuffing is due. If that day is also spend-free, it’s gold.
  • Dashed outline: an upcoming bill.
  • Ring: today.
  • Faint number: a day before you started, or after your current budget ends. You can’t tap it.

The number in days spend-free counts the spend-free days in the month on screen.

On no-spend days, tap a day to see its spending. Spending from envelopes whose switch is on is listed under transactions that don’t count as spending.
